NDP call on Ford to urgently support Peel’s mass vaccination centres

QUEEN’S PARK – Doug Ford must immediately support Peel’s three mass vaccinations centres the region is setting up to stop the spread of COVID-19, says NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and Peel region’s NDP MPPs, Deputy Leader Sara Singh (Brampton Centre), Gurratan Singh (Brampton East), and Kevin Yarde (Brampton North).

According to Dr. Lawrence Loh, Peel’s medical officer of health, Peel’s hospital system is “on the brink of catastrophe.”

“People are dying, and more and more people are being admitted to Peel’s hospitals. Doug Ford must stop the half-measures that consistently ignore and underfund the Peel region, costing lives,” said Horwath.

“We’re demanding that Ford immediately support the region of Peel in their call for help to set up three mass vaccination centres in the region,” said Gurratan Singh.

“Surgeries are being cancelled and patients are being transferred out to other areas of Ontario for care while ICU capacity is falling short,” said Sara Singh. “Shortchanging Brampton and the Region of Peel is already having dangerous consequences, and time is short to send help.”

Yarde said the people of Peel are doing everything they can to stop the spread, but they can’t keep doing it on their own.

“People are doing everything they can to stay home and keep people safe — but Peel families, including all the essential workers that live here — won’t be able to solve this problem without more help,” said Yarde. “Doug Ford must provide the region with the vaccines we need to meet the demands of our population, and he needs to provide paid sick days, on-site workplace testing, and more isolation centres.

There is no more time for Ford’s inaction.”
