Ford’s speed camera crusade is already making Ontarians less safe

QUEEN’S PARK — As Doug Ford’s disastrous speed camera removal agenda takes effect across the province, highlighted by new road signs that are too big to fit on poles, Ontario’s roads are no safer. Just this past weekend, another pedestrian was sent to hospital after being hit by a vehicle on Parkside Drive.

Ontario NDP MPP Jennifer French (Oshawa) asked questions of the Premier at Queen’s Park today, calling out the Conservatives’ failures on road safety.

“Within days of the Premier’s decision to ban speed cameras on Parkside Drive, we have already seen a collision that put a pedestrian in the hospital,” said French. “How many more people are going to be hospitalized before this government finally takes road safety seriously?”

The collision took place just north of where a safety camera used to stand. Ford banned automated enforcement cameras in favour of oversized signage that municipalities have been unable to implement.

“The Ford government has provided municipalities with speed limit signs so large that they don’t fit on existing poles. They’re so big they could make roads less safe by creating blind spots for children crossing the street.”

“Meanwhile, the government refuses to invest in proven measures that actually slow drivers down. They’re more focused on photo-ops and super-sized signs than keeping kids safe.”

New Democrats will continue pushing the Ford government to make Ontario’s roads safer.
