Ford must halve auto insurance rates: Windsor MPPs

WINDSOR – NDP MPPs Lisa Gretzky (Windsor West), Taras Nayshak (Essex) and Percy Hatfield (Windsor—Tecumseh) released the following statement on the news that Ontario’s auto insurance companies made record profits during the pandemic, even as claim payments dropped by 50 per cent due to reduced driving and fewer accidents:

“While Windsor residents made tough sacrifices to stay home and stop the spread of COVID-19, Ford allowed car insurance companies to keep charging high premiums and rake in record profits, despite the substantial reduction in claim payouts.

The pandemic should not have been a windfall for auto insurers. If claim payments dropped and fewer drivers were on the road, Ford should have made sure premiums were reduced as well. Instead, he did nothing and these companies made billions while Ontarians were gouged.

Families in Windsor need a break from the rising cost of living. Ford must stand up for Windsor families and reduce auto insurance premiums by 50 per cent right away.
