Financial statements show NDP’s grassroots movement comes out on top

ETOBICOKE — The Ontario NDP is in a stronger financial position than any other party, according to year-end financial statements — showing that the powerful grassroots movement people are building is working.

The NDP finished the year with $6.4 million in the bank, and the strongest net financial position of all provincial parties. Behind the NDP is Doug Ford’s PC party, with $5 million in the bank but $2.9 million in debt. The Ontario Liberals and Greens are well behind at $2.3 million and $1.5 million, respectively, in their accounts.

“Doug Ford and his PCs are holding fundraiser after fundraiser, charging people $1,000-a-pop to get an audience with Ford or members of his cabinet. He’s doubled individual donation limits so that his ultra-wealthy donors can go back to writing big fat cheques. But it’s the tens of thousands of people each donating a few dollars that tells the real story. Andrea Horwath is giving people hope, and they’re mobilizing to elect her in 2022,” said NDP Provincial Director Lucy Watson.

The NDP’s internal records show the average donation to the party was about $26 in 2020. The party raised nearly $2.6 million in 2020 through more than 90,000 individual donations. The average donation amount to the Ford Conservatives is over $500.

The final numbers for debt, fundraising and money in the bank come from Elections Ontario’s audited financial statements. Elections Ontario will now only include donations over $200 in regular reports, making the year-end statements much more accurate than in-year tracking.
